1933

 

FDR is inaugurated and launches New Deal.

1935

 

Cost of a first-class stamp is $0.03. 

 

Du Pont creates nylon, the first completely synthetic fabric.

 

Harry Jerome joins the school.

 

1936

 

The BBC debuts the world's first TV service programming three hours of a day.  The first successful helicopter flight is made.

 

Name changed to “Monroe Business School”.

 

1943

 

Mussolini is deposed and placed under arrest.

 

Rodgers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma! Opens.

 

Monroe is registered by the NY State Department of Education.

 

1945

 

US drops atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 

 

Grand Rapids, MI is the first community to fluoridate its water supply.

 

School expands across the street in preparation for post-war surge in enrollment.

 

1946

 

Benjamin Spock's childcare classic published.

Rosa Parks refuses to sit at the back of the bus in Ala.

 

James Dean dies in a car accident at age 26.

 

More classrooms and offices added at West Farms including the Starlight Ballroom.

 

1960

 

Hitchcock’s Psycho hits the silver screen.

 

Wilma Rudolph is the first American woman to win 3 Olympic gold medals.

 

Name changed to “Monroe Business Institute”.

 

1963

 

JFK is assassinated. 

 

The first heart transplant is completed.

 

First computer arrives.

 

Stephen Jerome joins Monroe.

 

1966

 

FDA declares "the Pill" is safe for human use.

 

Sound of Music wins Oscar for Best Picture.

 

Branch opens at 29 E. Fordham Road.

 

1967

 

Israeli and Arab forces battle in Six-Day War. 

 

Green Bay wins the first Super Bowl.

1969

 

Apollo 11 astronauts take first walk on the Moon.

Monroe grants two-year associate degrees.

College celebrates 50th anniversary.

 

New Rochelle campus opens. 

 

1983

 

Explosion kills 237 US Marines in Beirut.

 

The first compact disc is introduced.

 

College is authorized to grant A.A.S. degrees.

 

1985

 

Oliver North, Jr., at the center of the Iran-Contra Affair.

 

Prozac released for use in the US.

 

Monroe is designated as a candidate  for accreditation by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

 

1987

 

South Africa frees Nelson Mandela after 27½ years.

 

Seinfeld debuts on NBC.

 

Middle States grants accreditation, the highest level of accreditation a college can receive. 

 

Name is changed to “Monroe College”. 

 

1990

 

Professor Anita Hill accuses Judge Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment.

 

NY Giants win the Super Bowl – “Wide right!”

 

Jerome Hall opens.  Additional space is added to the New Rochelle campus. 

 

College joins National Junior College Athletic Association. 

 

Hospitality and Tourism is introduced.

 

1991

 

Rock Hudson dies of AIDS at age 59.

 

 Tina Turner completes comeback with Grammy for “What’s Love Got To Do With it”.

 

College celebrates its 60th Anniversary.

 

 King Hall opens.

 

 Learning Resource Center opens.

 

 New Rochelle campus expands.

 

1993

 

Two LAPD officers convicted on civil rights charges for beating Rodney King.   Michael Jordan retires from the NBA to play baseball.

 

Marc Jerome joins the college.

 

1994

 

O. J. Simpson arrested in Brentwood killings.

 

Major league baseball players strike.

 

Dorms open in New Rochelle.

 

1995

 

Terrorist blows up Oklahoma City federal building.

 

Million Man March draws hundreds of thousands of black men to Washington, DC.

King Hall expands to include a gymnasium, cafeteria, classrooms, and offices.

College begins offering baccalaureate programs and degrees.

Men’s basketball team reaches the NJCAA Division III national finals.

President Clinton denies affair with Monica Lewinsky.

 

Titanic captures a record-tying 11 Academy Awards.

 

West Hall opens in the Bronx.

 

Health Office Associate is introduced.

 

2002

 

Ken Lay, chairman of Enron, resigns under cloud of investigation.

 

Spider-Man rakes in $406 million at the box office.

 

Men’s basketball team finishes fifth in the NJCAA Division I national tournament. 

 

Women’s softball is introduced. 

 

Culinary courses are offered. 

 

Two-year and four-year programs in criminal justice are introduced.

 

2003

 

U.S. launches war against Iraq, dethrones Saddam, and declares official end to combat operations. 

 

Space shuttle Columbia explodes, killing all 7 astronauts.

 

Allison Hall opens in New Rochelle. 

 

Monroe is approved to offer programs in Medical Assisting, Hospitality Management, and Health Services Administration.

 

Honors Program is initiated.

 

2004

 

Massachusetts becomes the first state to legalize Gay Marriage.

 

Boston Red Sox win the World Series.

 

Culinary Arts program offers Study Abroad in Italy.

 

SIFE Team wins national championship.

 

2005

 

Hurricane Katrina wreaks catastrophic damage on the Gulf coast.

 

Peter Jennings, anchor of ABC's World News Tonight, dies at age 67.

 

King Graduate School offers first classes.
