Monroe Lady Mustangs Take The Next Step

Monroe College Lady Mustang sophomore center Kizzie Gibson has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Elizabeth City State, an NCAA Division II school that plays in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest historical black conference in the nation. ECS is located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

Also, Monroe College Lady Mustang sophomore forward Akeisha Cumberbatch has announced that she will continue her college basketball career and education at SUNY Old Westbury, an NCAA Division III school located in Westbury, Long Island. The 6’5” Gibson, who hails from Bridgeport, Ct, averaged a whopping 8.4 rpg, 2.4 bpg, and 5.1ppg this season for the 19-11 Lady Mustangs. ECS coach Fred Batchelor is happy to have acquired a tall, hungry player.

“The main thing is that Kizzie has the desire to get better,” Coach Batchelor said. “Because of that, we think we can help her get to where she wants to be. With her size and ability, we think she can be an impact player.” As for Cumberbatch, in her freshman year, this New Rochelle, NY native was named an honorable mention, all-region player. According to Mustang coach Seth Goodman, her 3.2ppg and 1.1 rpg in her sophomore year don’t come near telling the full story. “This is a true team leader,” Coach Goodman explained. “She was our team captain and led her teammates by setting a good example both on and off the court.”
