Monroe Soccer Team Readies For Playoffs

Having completed a stellar 6-3-2 regular season, the Monroe Mustangs men’s soccer team is preparing for the postseason with hopes high. In the first round, the Mustangs will face Ulster CC, who defeated Monroe is last year’s Region XV championship game. The game will be held Saturday, October 25 at 2:30pm at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, NY.

Monroe is having a season to remember, especially considering the individual awards that Mustang players have won. At last night’s meeting to arrange playoff seeding, four Monroe players were recognized with impressive Region XV post-season awards awards. Freshman midfielder Jason Royes was named Region MVP. Freshmen midfielders Sheldon Graham and Serfield Peters were named first-team Region XV all-stars and sophomore midfielder Alric Thomas was named to the second team.

“We’ve set our sights high this year, “said Monroe head coach Patrick Clarke. “But like all good teams we have to focus on one game at a time. The upcoming game against Ulster is a huge challenge.” In last year’s finals, Ulster defeated the Mustangs 4-2, winning the Region championship in the process. Monroe exacted a measure of revenge winning 1-0 in a game earlier this season. Many observers believe Saturday’s Monroe/Ulster matchup could be one of the best games of the season.
