Monroe College To Play Varsity Baseball: Kiko Rodriguez Named Head Coach

The Monroe College Athletics Department will be adding baseball as a varsity sport in 2005. The college has named Kiko Reyes, a former professional player and veteran collegiate baseball coach, as the team’s first head coach. The team will compete in Region XV of the NJCAA, Division III.

“We’re excited about expanding Monroe athletics into baseball,” said Athletic Director Bert Shillingford. “Building a program around a coach who has professional experience and who knows local talent means that Mustang baseball will hit the ground running.” From May, 1996 to May, 2000 Coach Reyes played shortstop for the Newburgh Nighthawks, Waterbury Spirit, and Elmira Pioneers of the Northeast and Northern Leagues. He’s a four-time NY State all-star shortstop and in 1995 and 1996 was the CUNYAC player of the year. In 1995 he was the Division III national batting champion. He was the head coach at Lehman College from April, 2000 – June 2004.
