Monroe Names Assistant Men's Basketball Coach

After an exhaustive search, Monroe College Athletics Director Bert Shillingford and head coach Jeff Brustad have announced the hiring of Steven Hobbs to a key men’s basketball assistant coaching position. Hobbs has extensive experience as an assistant basketball coach, most recently at Palm Beach Community College in Florida.

"Coach Hobbs is an expert recruiter and evaluator of talent," said Coach Brustad. "Also, since Mustang basketball is emerging as a national power, Coach Hobbs is going to be able to bring us a broader perspective in our recruiting, scouting, and game planning."

In 2003-04 Coach Hobbs was assistant men’s basketball coach for the Palm Beach Community College team who was NJCAA Southern Conference in Florida champions and made the state tournament. The year before, as assistant coach with Independence Community College in Kansas, he recruited and signed 2003 freshman and 2004 conference player of the year J’son Stamper. Stamper, a Bronx power forward from Co-op City, now plays at the University of Minnesota.

Coach Hobbs’ proudest moment came in 1996 when he was an assistant coach for 1996 NJCAA Division II national champions at Penn Valley Community College.
