The Nation's First Asian-American Police Commissioner

On Friday, May 26, Monroe College Criminal Justice Professor David Chong was sworn in as Commissioner of Police for Mt. Vernon, NY. He becomes the first Asian-American Police Commissioner in the United States. “We couldn’t be more proud,” said Criminal Justice Chairman William McDonald, Ph.D. “This underscores our commitment to giving Monroe Criminal Justice students a faculty comprised of some of the most accomplished pros in the industry. Clearly, our students are learning from the best.”

 

Before assuming the Mt. Vernon position, Commissioner Chong was a decorated retired Detective Lieutenant of the NYPD, the Commander of the NYPD Counter Terrorism Unit, and is an internationally recognized expert on the subject. He has been teaching at Monroe for three years.
