School For General Studies Freshmen

Tuesday September 5th is going to be a big day for Monroe College’s School for General Studies (SGS) freshmen. On that day they’ll be treated to a Welcome Fair where the focus will be on opportunities that will help them be successful in college as they get ready for the Thursday, September 7th – the first day of classes.

“This is about making a commitment to success,” said SGS Dean Carol Genese, “and so we’re going to match the students’ commitment by making sure all the resources they need are right at their fingertips.” Held at two different times on Tuesday, September 5: 12:00-1:00 pm and 5:00-6:00 pm on the third floor of King Hall, the Welcome Fair will have three main sections: Academic Support

Services, Clubs, and Student Services. Included will be information about support systems that are vital to success for urban college students, including nutrition, part-time jobs, day care, employment, domestic violence, and other topics that will help eliminate boundaries to being successful. Also, each student who attends will receive ten coupons that can be exchanged for free tutoring sessions on any subject at any time. The estimated value of the coupon book is $500. Students will also be able to get to know the SGS staff: Dean Genese, Student Services Counselors Karen Stuart and Aliza Scherr, and Administrative staff Cecil Wright and Denise enderson.

“It’s all about their success and we’re ready to partner with them every step of the way,” said Dean Genese. “This special day will be an excellent first step in turning dreams into reality.”
