Monroe Men And Women Hoop Teams Win Region Titles In One Day, Again!

For the third consecutive season, the Monroe College men’s and women’s basketball teams won Region XV championships on the same day. On Sunday, March 5 the (33-0) Lady Mustangs beat Hostos CC, 71-49 in the NJCAA, Division III women’s final. Then later in the day the (29-3) Mustangs won their Division I final over Globe, 76-56. This was the women’s third straight Region XV championship and the fourth in a row for the men. Both games were played at Sullivan CC, Loch Sheldrake, NY.

“We are extremely proud of our coaches and athletes for what they’ve accomplished this season,” beamed Athletic Director Bert Shillingford. “Goodness, our two basketball teams are a combined 62-3! This says a lot about the commitment Monroe has to student success in and out of the classrooms and on and off the playing fields.”

The Lady Mustangs came into the tournament as the undefeated, number one seed, with a 22-0 conference record. They reached the final game by beating Nassau, 78-39 in Saturday’s semifinal. They now qualify for the eight-team NJCAA, Division III National Tournament which begins on Thursday, March 16 at Mohawk CC, Utica, NY.

The Mustangs came into the tournament as the number two seed, with a 2-2 conference record, with those two losses coming against (#1) Globe. On Saturday they won the semifinal game, 73-66, over Westchester CC. They will now compete in the four-team District III tournament, to be played on March 10-11 in Aiken, South Carolina. Monroe’s first opponent is Clinton Junior College of Rock Hill, SC. The game time is 5pm. The NJCAA, Division I National Tournament is March 21- 25 in Hutchinson, Kansas.
