MONROE ACCOUNTING STUDENTS WIN SCHOLARSHIPS:From National Association of Black Accountants

Three Monroe College Accounting students have been rewarded for their academic excellence and community service by the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA).

On Thursday, June 7 at the 27th Annual NABA Scholarship & Awards Gala at the Waldorf-Astoria, Geoff Cooper, the student president of the Monroe College NABA Chapter, was named the NABA New York Chapter Student of the Year.  In addition, Mr. Cooper and Monroe student Jessica Ramirez received Goldman Sachs scholarship awards.

Also, Tula Nisbett, First Vice President of the Monroe Accounting and Finance Club was awarded an NABA National Scholarship.  As a result, next week along with a dozen of her classmates, Ms. Nesbitt will be attending the NABA National Convention and Diversity Recruitment Expo in Philadelphia where the actual scholarship will be awarded.

"I'm bursting with pride," said Professor Max Torres who is the Faculty Advisor of Monroe's Accounting and Finance Club.  "With their work in the club and in the classroom, it's clear that they will not only be successful in college, but in their professional careers as well."

In fact, a component of the upcoming convention in Philadelphia will include opportunities to network with some of the biggest corporations in the nation who are hungry to recruit quality college students.

Reflecting on her success, Mr. Nisbett said, "A year ago, this was not something I would have thought I'd be doing.  But being part of the Accounting and Finance Club, I saw all the possibilities that were open to me and now I have a drive to continue my work with NABA and volunteer my services.  I take the club's motto of ‘achieving excellence through professionalism' very seriously."

In addition to being academically gifted, the three students have written business plans for businesses in the New Rochelle BID and have tutored other Monroe students in accounting.  Also, Mr. Cooper was an intern at the United Nations.

The Masters of Ceremony of the NABA event at the Waldorf-Astoria were WCBS TV anchors Maurice DuBois and Dana Tyler.  Since its inception in 1969 NABA has provided millions in scholarship funds to deserving students.
