On Friday, August 17, the Monroe College SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) Team had a resounding success with the launch of the third year of its Cupid In Business project that’s designed to provide women in shelters with job preparation, financial literacy and independence, and self-motivation skills. Twenty-five women from a number of different Bronx shelters attended the event and participated in computer skills and resume writing classes, as well as workshops on writing business plans and financial literacy. There were also motivational speakers who shared their experiences in overcoming obstacles. By the end of the event, many of the women laid the groundwork for independent futures by opening bank accounts and enrolling in college. In addition to the SIFE team, the sponsors of the event included the Small Business Administration, Washington Mutual, Accion, the Monroe College Department of Career Services, and a number of Monroe College students and staff. SIFE is planning a number of Cupid in Business sessions through February, 2008. |
