Monroe Culinary team goes gold – and more!

Monroe Culinary had a tremendous showing at the NY State Hot Food Championship on Saturday, February 5 in the Monroe Culinary Arts Center.

Monroe’s varsity team, led by senior Jesus Alvarez scored an impressive 5 team gold medals, narrowly placing second behind the winning team from the Culinary Institute of America.

Competing for medal consideration only, the Monroe junior varsity team, led by Captain Tihelia James, was the talk of the competition, also earning five team gold medals and winning the hearts of the judges in the process.

“The poise and professionalism shown by both teams was exemplary,” said Dean Frank Costantino. “I have coached many teams and I have attended many state championships in NY and other states; and by far, I have never been more proud of a group of students nor have I been part of a better hosted event than the one here on Saturday.”

In addition to Jesus Alvarez, the varsity team included seniors Kareem Meade, Shari Sweeney and Lourdes Mejia along with recent graduate Christine Gonzalez, who, along with Alvarez, are two former Study Abroad students.

Besides Tihelia James a C-CAP student, the Junior Varsity included freshmen Samantha Gonzalez, a C-CAP student, Dwight Duvoll, Gaby Grande and Jessica Johnson. In fact, Gaby won the America’s Best High School Chef competition and is a C-CAP scholar and Jessica was the winning America’s Best High School Pastry Chef.
