SIFE Team Supports One Sight

On Friday, February 11 the SIFE team visited the One Sight facility in Port Washington, NY to deliver the eyeglasses (approximately 800 glasses) that they had collected on Monroe campuses for several months.

One Sight, a Luxottica Foundation, is a family of charitable vision care programs dedicated to improving vision through outreach, research and education. Since 1988, these charitable efforts have provided free vision care and eyewear to more than seven million people in need around the world and have granted millions of dollars towards optical research and education.

In addition to the donation, the students had the opportunity to participate in the recycling process of the glasses: sorting, cleaning, checking the lenses and packaging for delivery.

The SIFE students were gratified to know that they helped the effort since 314 million people worldwide suffer from poor vision simply because they do not have access to or cannot afford care. In fact, in some countries, a pair of eye wear costs more than a month’s salary. Of course, poor vision negatively affects a child’s ability to learn in school and robs an adult of independence, mobility and quality of life.
