On Friday, October 5th, Monroe College honored long-time professor and accounting pioneer Jake Lamar with the dedication of the Jake Lamar Accounting Lab on the occasion of his retirement. Hosted by President Stephen Jerome, the event welcomed Mr. Lamar’s family, friends and fellow employees.
President Jerome kicked off the dedication with a heartfelt and appreciative speech, describing Mr. Lamar as “a person, who, over the last 25 years, has really changed this college. He has brought something forward that I would define as the culture of this college, and that is really caring about the students.”
Each subsequent speech, made by Mr. Lamar’s colleagues and friends, spoke of his amazing dedication (including seven-day work weeks), his signature sense of humor, and his passion for both accounting and his students.
The lab, complete with 27 computers and five accounting tutors, reflects the success of Mr. Lamar’s 25-year journey at Monroe, which started with a blackboard in his office. Mr. Lamar believed that in order to be successful his students needed to learn accounting two ways: on paper and on a computer. His quest for such a learning environment has transformed Monroe’s accounting program into one of the most successful in New York. Today, students will use the lab to learn core accounting skills and to complete their accounting projects with real-world applications.
