New Rochelle, NY - The Monroe Mustangs baseball team hosted its third and final Scout Day of the year Wednesday afternoon (October 25) at their brand new home field at City Park in New Rochelle. Monroe players showcased their talents for over a dozen scouts, eight from Major League baseball. There were also representatives from various NCAA schools and other professional baseball organizations.
“This was a great opportunity for our guys to put their skills on display and show what they have been working on throughout the summer as well as what they have improved on since our fall season started a couple months ago,” said head coach Luis Melendez. “It's especially exciting this time around not only because of the great turnout but also because it's the first time we have been able to host a scout day on our home field."
Monroe had been playing its home games upstate, this year they will settle into their new digs in City Park, just minutes from the New Rochlle campus.
The layout of the day started with a 60-yard dash that was followed by outfield and infield sessions. Then there was hitting. The day culminated with appoximately twenty Mustangs pitchers taking the hill.
Monroe's three scout days, in winter, spring, and fall, have been an instrumental in helping Mustangs advance their careers. As a result of 2011's trio of scout days all eighteen of Monroe's graduating sophomores moved on to four year colleges/universities. After the 2012 spring season several Mustangs were invited to Major League Baseball pre-draft workouts.
Since 2009, six former Mustangs have been signed by professional organizations, including Normand Gosselin who signed with the Quebec City Capitals of the Can-Am league for the 2012 season. The other former Mustangs who were signed by professional teams are Jonathan Gonzalez, Greggory Downing (LA Dodgers), Jorge Navarette (Toronto Blue Jays), Jose Macias (Oakland A's) and Victor Lara who was drafted by the Arizona Diamond Backs. |
