It is the policy of Monroe College to prohibit harassment of any employee by another employee or Supervisor or any third party, including vendors, on the basis of age, race, color, creed, disability, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, military or veteran status, familial status and/or any other characteristic prohibited by law. The purpose of this policy is not to regulate our employee’s personal morality. Rather, it is to ensure that, in the workplace, no employee harasses another. While it is not always easy to identify precisely when harassment occurs, it certainly includes slurs, epithets, threats, derogatory comments and unwelcome jokes, teasing, sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other similar verbal, non verbal, or physical contact. Any employee who feels that he/she is the victim of such harassment (whether sexual or otherwise), should immediately follow the procedures outlined in the General Policy on Sexual Assault and Harassment which appears below. Violations of this policy will not be permitted and may result in discipline up to and including discharge. For Monroe College to be able to remedy alleged harassment, it is imperative that claims be brought to the attention of management promptly. Failure to report harassment claims promptly hampers Monroe College’s ability to take necessary steps in such situations.
The College will discreetly and promptly conduct an investigation of any complaints in this area, maintaining confidentiality to the extent possible. Retaliating or discriminating against an employee or student for complaining about harassment is prohibited. An employee or student will not be subject to retaliation as a result of making a complaint of harassment. The College recognizes that the issue of whether harassment has occurred requires a factual determination based on all the evidence received. The College also recognizes that false accusations of harassment may have serious effects on innocent men and women. We trust that all employees will continue to act in a responsible and professional manner to maintain a pleasant working environment free of such conduct. |
