Top 10 Reasons to Choose SGS

SGS administrators and faculty work closely with the Office of Admissions to select the best applicants to the School of General Studies.
SGS administrators and faculty work closely with the Chairs and academic advisors to plan your curriculum and strategize your transition to second year status.
The SGS classrooms, your counselors’ office and the Dean’s office, are just steps apart. Most classes are taught in King Hall, which is also the home of SGS.
SGS offers students a link to the world of technology through the Learning Resource Center located within King Hall. Internet, e-mail, word processing and other functions are easily accessible. Most importantly, all college lab facilities are supported by trained, friendly professionals and tutors.
Finding academic support is made easier through our tutoring program. Tutors are not only available in your classrooms and the Learning Center for one-on one instruction but also through individually scheduled appointments to offer assistance in all your academic subject areas. They know where you are, and where you want to go!
The "team approach plan" system enables you to experience the full extent of the services offered by the SGS. Your faculty instructors and advisors will meet regularly to discuss your progress, your strengths (and weaknesses) and strategize how to better assist your academic progression.
Three majors are available to students. Each major leads to second year status in the chosen disciplines. You will have the opportunity to revisit your decision to ensure you have made the right choice. Also, SGS seminars are offered throughout the semester to help you prepare for your academic success.
”Getting Ready” is a unique School of General Studies seminar providing students with one-on-one and group advising opportunities, exercises in developing better time management skills, study habits, critical thinking and analytical reasoning — all ingredients for a successful college student! Through SGS you can develop new skills or raise your achievements to a more competitive level.
Monroe is a large, urban institution. The SGS average class size is about 20 students — just the right size to get to know your classmates and make a personal academic mark. The smaller classroom environment will also help you to seek additional guidance from your professors and enable you to explore the subject areas of a course that most interest you.
You will be in the company of the finest academic minds. Faculty and tutors are selected based on their experience in the classroom, their knowledge of their academic discipline, and their dedication to helping you achieve your academic best. Additionally, you will be in the company of over 300 students; each will bring to the SGS classroom — and the Monroe community — great ideas, incredible visions and fantastic perspectives ready to be shared and explored throughout the year.
