The BS in Public Health Degree program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the systems and institutions of the American health care system that function to protect and improve the health of people and communities through education, injury and disease prevention, and promotion of healthy lifestyles. Agencies with responsibility for public health can only carry out their missions if they have properly educated professionals to fulfill the core functions of public health.

The hallmark of public health is being proactive to disease and disability rather than reactive to these problems. With this goal in mind students will be provided with the knowledge and skills to collect and analyze data, identify community needs as well as plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate programs designed to encourage healthy lifestyles, policies, and environments. Public health professionals may also serve as a resource to assist individuals, other professionals, or the community. As such, skills in the areas of communication, counseling, leadership, and diplomacy are paramount for success. The liberal arts component of the program complements the community health requirements. It provides substantive course work in the humanities and social sciences and broad-based liberal arts courses that encourage students to achieve higher levels of self-knowledge, develop analytical skills, communicate ideas effectively, and make sound judgments.
