Practical Nursing

Nursing is a multi-level, competency based profession which ranges from beginning level, where essential knowledge is required, to a more advance level, where knowledge is greater in depth and wider in range of nursing actions. Monroe Practical Nursing students are prepared to work in a host of health care settings as providers of care, managers of care, and members of the nursing profession. Our college credit-bearing Practical Nursing program also prepares students for progression into the Associate Degree Nursing Program.

Program Objectives

The objectives of the nursing program reflect an organizational framework founded upon basic human needs, the nursing process, systems theorgy, critical thinking, and the scope of practice for the licensed practical nurse and registered nurse.

Upon completion of the PN program, the graduate will be able to:

  • Provide care within the ethical, legal, and regulatory frameworks of nursing and standards of nursing practice.
  • Contribute to the development of the plan of care by utilizing basic evaluation methods, data collection, and critical thinking.
  • Effectively communicate with individuals, families, and defined populations.
  • Promote health by teaching clients with identified health needs using standardized teaching plans.
  • Collaborate with the implementation and utilization of strategies and resources to promote health and wellness, and illness prevention in families, individuals and defined populations.
  • Recognize cultural differences among individuals and groups.
  • Collaborate with appropriate members of the health care team to provide care for assigned clients with common health problems across the lifespan.
  • Demonstrate accountability as provider of care who can effectively use available resources.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to the program is highly competitive. Applicants who wish to enroll in the nursing program must:

  • meet the general admissions requirements of the College, and have a GPA of 2.5 or grade level 75%.
  • take and pass the ATI TEAS Exam.
  • not require remedial English or math.
  • must have taken, and passed algebra, biology and chemistry in either high school or college.
  • have a medical examination including all mandatory tests: toxicology, varicella testing, hepatitis, rubella, rubeola, tuberculosis, as well as a chest x-ray if indicated by a +PPD, within the past two years and a profile of any existing medical problems
    1. Progression Requirements

      Students must complete each semester with a grade-point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better. Letter grades are generated in the theoretical component of the clinical course. The clinical component, which must be passed concurrently, is pass/fail with only a grade of P or F being assigned. Students are allowed to repeat one nursing and one non-nursing course. The certificate must be earned within three years and the students are encouraged to take the NCLEX-PN as soon as possible upon completion of the program.
