Monroe Institutional Grants and Scholarships

Freshmen Grants

Freshmen grants are awarded when the student first enters the college by the Freshmen Student Financial Services Office.

Monroe Tuition Grant (TLC)

Awarded for the institution’s academic year based on remaining need and unique family circumstances. The average award may range up to $500 per semester for the award year. The amount is determined by the appropriate administrator on each campus. It may be awarded for one, two, or three semesters depending on starting semester and budget limitations. Students must remain in good academic standing.

Legacy Grant (LEA)

A grant of $500 (if student is full time) awarded to children of Monroe graduates. Students must maintain a GPA of 2.0. It may be pro-rated for part-time study and continues until graduation. Students who fall below the 2.0 GPA requirements may be put on probation for the following semester.

New York Metro Grant (NYM)

Commuter students, who have graduated from high school in 2011, have been authorized to register by June 30, 2011 and have an estimated family contribution (EFC) on their FAFSA of zero will be eligible for a grant of up to $845. This grant will continue until the completion of their Associates Degree. Students must remain in good academic standing.

International Student Grant (ISG )

This grant is for entering international graduate and undergraduate students and may range from a minimum award of $500 per semester based on prior academic achievement and dorm status. Students must remain in good academic standing. Award continues until completion of undergraduate studies.

Adult Learning Grant (ADLG)

May be awarded to working, independent students (based on federal guidelines) who are at least 21 years of age and worked in 2010. The award may range from $250 to $1500 per semester. The amount of the award is determined by the remaining balance after all grants and subsidized loans have been subtracted from the cost of tuition and fees. The grant will last until the completion of the Associates Degree or 60 credits if the student enters directly into the BBA program.

Freshmen Scholarships

Presidential Scholarship (PRES)

Up to $12,000 per award year to high school seniors with GPAs of 90, or in top10% of class or SAT scores of 1800 or better. Students must maintain a 3.25 GPA and full-time status. The scholarship remains in effect through the completion of undergraduate studies. Awards may range up to $4,000 per semester based on a student’s financial aid.

Trustees Scholarship (TRUST)

Up to $7,500 per award year to high school seniors with GPAs of 85 or in top 20% of class or SAT scores of 1650 or better. Students must maintain a 3.25 cum. GPA. The scholarship remains in effect through the completion of undergraduate studies. Awards may range up to $2,500 per semester based on a student’s financial aid.

Deans Scholarship (DEAN)

Up to $4,500 per award year to high school seniors with GPAs of 80 or in top 30% of class or with SAT scores of 1500 or better or demonstrated academic excellence. Students must maintain a 3.25 GPA. The scholarship remains in effect through the completion of undergraduate studies. Awards my range up to $1,500 per semester based on a student’s financial aid.

C-CAP Scholarship (C-CAP)

This scholarship is only available to C-CAP students and may be up to $6,320 per semester for tuition and fees. It is awarded by the C-CAP Executive Board to participating high school students who both academically qualify and place in culinary competitions nationwide. The Dean of the School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts is responsible for finalizing this award for entering full-time freshmen Culinary or Baking and Pastry students. Students must maintain a 3.25 GPA.

The scholarship ends upon completion of the 2-year Culinary or Baking and Pastry Program.

America’s Best High School Chef and Pastry Chef (HSCS)

Monroe College offers full and partial scholarships per semester to the winner(s) of the competition for America’s Best High School Chef which can range up to $6,000. This competition is sponsored by Monroe College. Students wishing to take part in this completion must contact the School of Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts.

International Scholarships (INTS)

International scholarships of up to $3,500 may be awarded per semester to incoming freshmen based on their high school records or to upper level freshmen based on their prior college credit. This award lasts through the student’s undergraduate studies. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25. The awards are competitive based on the rigor of the high school program or prior college attended. No minimum grade point average guarantees an award.

International students receiving this scholarship who must return to their country in an authorized semester and attend Monroe in a less than full-time status by taking classes on-line will receive a pro-rated scholarship. Upon returning to full-time status on campus, the full scholarship will be awarded if eligibility has been maintained.

Monroe Opportunity Scholarship (MOS)

Awarded to students recruited from designated out-of-state areas (USVI, PR, CT, FL, NJ, RI, MD, PA GA, IL) and may be extended to additional designated areas. A minimum GPA of 70 is required and students must be living in Monroe housing. The award will last until the completion of undergraduate studies. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA. The MOS award may continue for students who were former dormitory residents, who provide documentation of their off-campus housing to the Student Financial Services office before the start of the semester.

The initial award is $2,000 but may increase based on the difference between the maximum Pell award of $2,775 and the actual Pell award up to a maximum award of $2,775.

The number of these awards is limited to the annual MOS budget per campus

Students who are first-time Bachelor’s students may also be eligible for this award.

Baccalaureate Transfer Scholarships

Scholarship is applicable to transferring students with 30 or more transferable credits.

Grants and Scholarships for Continuing Students

Campus Grant (CGR)

Specific CGR grants may be awarded to students by the appropriate college administrator based on unanticipated changes to the student’s financial aid package or other financial circumstances. These may be awarded to continuing and freshmen on a case by case basis.

Employee Grants (EGR)

Employee grants cover the cost of tuition and fees for employees, their spouses and children who are under 24 and living with their parents. Course approval forms must be reviewed and signed by the President of the College. The appropriate Financial Aid administrator is notified accordingly. Students receiving an EGR are not eligible for Monroe scholarships or any other Monroe grants. Employees enrolled in the BBA or MBA program may be limited to two courses per semester. Only employees are eligible for an EGR for MBA courses. Employees and/or their children or spouses are not required to file for financial aid.

John Milavec Memorial Award (JMA)

This is a one-time one-semester award of up to $300 to offset the cost of books for students who have maximized their sources of tuition funding, but still do not have funds for their books. Students must complete and submit an application by the 2nd week of the semester and must have a minimum GPA of 2.0. Applications may be obtained from the Student Financial Services Office. Applications for students who have already received a Milavec Award in a previous semester will be considered if funds are available after qualifying first-time applicants have been awarded.

Monroe Partnership Grant (MPG)

A grant of up to 20% of tuition for students who are employed by an organization that has a partnership agreement with Monroe College. The amount of the grant depends on the company’s partnership agreement. It may be pro-rated for less than full-time study. Contact the Admissions Office to determine eligibility. This may be awarded to freshmen as well as continuing students.

Transitional Baccalaureate Scholarship

This is a one-time scholarship applicable to continuing Monroe Associate degree graduates pursuing their Bachelor’s degree at Monroe College (1st semester of bachelor’s admission only). No application is required.

After earning a Transitional Scholarship, the student is eligible to earn a Monroe Bachelor’s Degree Scholarship during future semesters.

Monroe’s Baccalaureate Degree Scholarship

This scholarship is applicable to continuing Monroe Bachelor’s degree students.

Cumulative GPA of 3.75 – 4.00
12 credits or more in previous semester
Not less than a C in any course

Specialized Scholarships

Katherine Wu/Melissa Chiang Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to two currently enrolled Bronx Campus accounting major students at Monroe College each year in the Fall semester in the amount of $500 per semester to help cover the cost of tuition, books and supplies while attending Monroe College. Students must have 75 college credits at the time of application, must be an existing accounting major pursuing a bachelor’s degree and must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above. A short essay will be required as part of the application process. Please contact the Dean of the Bachelor’s Degree Program for the application. Applications must be submitted by August 31 of the academic year. Recipients will be determined by the Bachelor’s Program Office.

Craig Rutman Scholarship for Culinary Arts

Awarded in the Fall semester for the Study Abroad Program to culinary students who demonstrate an excellence in the culinary arts. The scholarship will be awarded each fall semester and may be up to $8,000 . The student must be a culinary major, have completed at least 45 credits, have a GPA in their major of 3.5, provide two letters of recommendation, one academic and one personal, as well as completing a personal interview and a culinary practical examination. A student’s enrollment in this or any study abroad program approved for credit by the home institution may be considered enrollment at the home institution for the purposes of applying for assistance under the Title IV programs. Special Notes Related to Scholarships

All scholarships are originally awarded based on full-time enrollment status.

Part-time Status for Scholarship students

Scholarship students, other than International students, who go from full-time to part-time, receive a pro-rated scholarship for their part-time semester, but are not eligible for the scholarship the semester following their part-time status. Scholarship students, who are in their last semester and are part-time, will receive a pro-rated scholarship.

Students who are directly admitted to the college as Bachelor students may not receive the Baccalaureate Scholarship until they have completed their Associate Degree requirements or earned a minimum of 60 credits. At that time, they will receive the Baccalaureate Scholarship if they have the required cumulative GPA of 3.75.

Students may only receive one scholarship funded by Monroe College

Scholarship Appeals: Students may appeal the loss of their scholarship by contacting the Director of Student Financial Services at the appropriate campus. Documentation supporting the appeal will be required before any decision is made.

Athletic Scholarships

Athletic scholarships are structured at Monroe according to the division in which the team competes within the National Junior College Athletic Association. All teams with their related divisions are listed below:

Maximum awards are determined by division as follows:

  • Division I Teams – Maximum awards may include tuition, fees, books, housing, meals, and transportation costs one time per academic year to and from the college by direct route.
  • Division II Teams – Maximum awards are limited to tuition, fees and books.
  • Division III Teams – May not receive athletic scholarships.

Actual awards take into account the following factors:

  1. The student’s eligibility for financial aid grants.
  2. The available budget and judgment of the coach and athletic director.

Athletic Scholarships are awarded annually and can be renewed for student athletes who maintain good academic and athletic standing as defined by both institutional and NJCAA eligibility criteria.
