Minor in Sports Management

An Overview

An Associate degree program in Sports Management can offer students the opportunity to learn to utilize business skills in a sports industry. The sports industry is a significant growth industry and career opportunities abound in areas like professional sports, amateur sports, consumer products, athletic and performance apparel/equipment companies, youth sports, government sponsored recreation facilities and athletic administration. Students can learn the fundamentals of how professional clubs oversee their business, the components of event management,finance & budget strategies, marketing and initiating promotional campaigns. Students can also explore issues in media sports coverage and principles of ethics and law in business.

Why minor in Sports Management?

 

The Sports Management minor is designed to provide students with an applied business degree for the sports environment/industry. Minoring is Sports Management will assist in the acquisition of a strong foundation in management, finance, accounting, marketing, communications, ethics and legal aspects of business. Specific courses in Sport Management provide students with an understanding of the role of sport in society, the role of management in sport, and opportunities to apply their knowledge in sport-related organizations.

Where do Sports Management Professionals work?

Program directors in community sport programs, marketing and promotions director, academic services for student-athletics, corporate sales director, director of ticketing and finance, sporting goods sales representative, intramural director of campus recreation, facilities coordinator, athletic director, compliance director, athletic business manager, and fitness manager are all sport management titles. Additional titles may include Sports Lawyer, Operations Manager Assistant Box Office Manager Arena Director, Employee Relations, and Director of Youth Recreation.

Potential Sports Management jobs include:

  • Athletic Director – Provide guidance and direction for a sports program, prepare a budget and allocate spending on items like coach’s salaries, team travel, equipment purchases, and facility upkeep. Athletic Directors work with coaches to determine scheduling of games/practices and plan/coordinate trips.
  • Sports Agent – Negotiates employment and endorsement deals for an athlete or coach. An agent receives a commission for their services between 4 and 10%. The agent also may assist in public relations and all aspects of their client’s finances.
  • Sports Information Director – Handles the distribution of information regarding athletic programs. Sports Information Directors attend sporting events and writes recaps of the games before sending it to media outlets. During games, they distribute statistics and inform reporters if any records were broken.
  • Stadium Business Managers – Oversees all aspects of the stadium, maintain budgets, up keeping, and find creative ways to fill seats on a constant basis. Stadium Business Managers also manage the booking of events including sports and concerts. Stadium Business Managers also make important hiring decisions, selecting employees who manage and lead event staff.

What are the course requirements for a minor in Sports Management?

In addition to all other Business Management degree requirements, the Sports Management Minor requires successful completion of 21 credits in Project Management and business related courses.

This must consist of:

• Five required Sports Management courses 15 credits

• A minimum of two minor elective courses 6 credits
