The Monroe College Honors Program provides opportunities for academically accomplished students to engage in advanced academic work and to participate in enhanced shared intellectual experiences with distinguished professors and guest lecturers. The full intellectual engagement of students and faculty is emphsaized by promoting an academic environment characterized by a high level of discourse, integrity, respect and excellence. The pursuit of excellence in college-level studies entails thorough understanding and informed appreciation of areas outside a major field of specialization, along with focused excellence within it. Hence, the Monroe College Honors Program provides challenging courses, active learning opportunities, and strong personal advisement which broaden and deepen the academic experience. Honors students also enjoy a wide variety of special programs and services through a world of personal and scholarly opportunity available to everyMonroe College Honors student. In addition, the Honors Program sponsors lectures, seminars and workshops for Honors Program students and faculty. By opening many of these events to the general Monroe faculty, staff and student population, and to the public, the Honors experience is shared more broadly. Each semester, the Honors Program sponsors the Honors Colloquium, a scholarly and celebratory program where honors students present their projects and papers to the college community. Honors Programs are usually structured as a general education or core component followed by advanced courses which may or may not be in a student's departmental major. Almost always honors curriculums are incorporated within whatever number of credits is required for graduation. Very rarely, will Honors programs require students to take additional credits. Students who complete an honors program or honors college curriculum frequently receive transcript and diploma notations as well as certificates, medallions, or other citations at graduation ceremonies. Monroe College is a member of the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC), an organization that serves Honors professionals and students by advancing excellence in undergraduate education. As defined by the NCHC, an Honors Program is a sequence of courses designed specifically to encourage independent and creative learning. |
