Earning Your Honors Diploma

Once you are accepted to the Monroe College Honors Program, what’s next? What do you have to do?

A student earns Honors units by taking Multidisciplinary Honors courses, specially designated Honors sections of general education courses, and major area courses in the regular curriculum. The Honors Board publishes a listing of the Honors courses and Honors sections that are offered each semester.

Multidisciplinary Honors Courses

HN 150            The Honors Experience

HN 240            The Art and Culture of World Dance

HN 250            The Evolution of the American Presidency

HN 260            Holocaust, Genocide, & the Human Rights Movement in the 20th Century

HN 270            Contemporary Literary Genres

HN 314            Science and Technology: The Formation of the Modern World

HN 350            Comparative Urbanism in the 20th Century

HN 450            Honors Program Research Seminar

 

Honors Sections of General Education Courses

Courses include, but are not limited to the following examples:

EN 109            Expository Writing

EN 110            Composition and Literature

EN 210            Film and Literature

The following courses are offered within students’ major area programs. Course offerings vary each semester. A listing of Honors sections by school is below.

A student earns three Honors Units for completing a three-credit Honors-designated course, an Honors section of a general education course, or an Honors section of a general education course on the following conditions:

  • Successful completion of the course, as determined by a final grade of C or better,
  • Participation in all course experiential learning activities, and
  • Participation in Honors Colloquium

 Honors Diploma

Associate’s Level

To earn distinction as an Honors Program graduate at the Associate’s level, students must:

  • Successfully complete HN-150: The Honors Experience,
  • Earn a minimum of 9 Honors units,
  • Participate in community service activities through the Honors Program, and
  • Have a 3.5 cumulative GPA at the time of graduation.

 Bachelor’s Level

To earn distinction as an Honors Program graduate at the Bachelor’s level, students must:

  • Successfully complete HN-150: The Honors Experience,
  • Successfully complete HN-450: Honors Program Research Seminar,
  • Earn a minimum of 18 Honors units,
  • Participate in community service activities through the Honors Program, and
  • Have a 3.5 cumulative GPA at the time of graduation.

 

The diplomas and transcripts of Honors Program graduates bear the symbol of Honors distinction, and graduates are recognized at commencement.  An Honors diploma is distinct from Latin honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude), and Honors students will earn an Honors diploma with Latin honors.
