School of General Studies

The School of General Studies is a one-year, full-time freshman experience program for selected first-year students who are given the opportunity to excel in small, structured, rigorous learning environments where they can earn their G.E.D. and credits toward their college degree. Students need to be 21 years of age and older to be eligible for the program. The purpose of the curriculum is three-fold:

  • To be fully enrolled in an Associate's Degree program
  • To gain a G.E.D., and to ensure students' readiness for success in college study
  • To focus on critical thinking, writing, and study skills

SGS students will fulfill requirements in their chosen Associate's degree field of study. And because they participate fully in our unique Team Approach, SGS students enjoy all the benefits and resources available at Monroe. SGS students have access to the standard Monroe benefits, including small classes (average of 20 students per class); intensive courses with block programming; one-on-one advising; and intensive tutoring.
