Admissions Frequently Asked Questions

Applicants often have many questions about their education. A Monroe admissions counselor will be glad to address all questions and concerns. Some of the most frequently asked questions (FAQ) are below.

Remember to have high school academic records and official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions forwarded to the campus you plan to attend.

Interviews are generally required of all applicants except international students. These meetings provide an excellent opportunity for you to learn about the many benefits of a Monroe College education, and for Monroe to learn about you and your goals. An interview will be arranged after your application is reviewed.

Acceptance by the Admissions Committee is based on the review of all your submitted documents and the admissions interview.

By attending Monroe College three semesters per year, qualified students can complete either an Associate or a Bachelor's degree in as little as sixteen months, or both degrees in under three years. Because of Monroe's generous transfer policies, students with transfer credit from another college can complete their degrees even quicker.

To ensure individualized instruction and quality education, all of Monroe's classes are kept small: rather than large lecture halls, classes meet in smaller, more intimate classrooms. Average class size is only 15 to 20 students.

Apartment-style student housing is available at Monroe College's New Rochelle campus. All accommodations are fully furnished and equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, and common living area. Housing is located within convenient walking distance of campus, shopping, laundromats, financial institutions and public transportation.

Students can attend weekend classes at the Bronx campus on both Saturday and Sunday; at the New Rochelle campus on Saturdays. Weekend classes meet 8:45 to 11:30 a.m., 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and 2:35 to 5:20 p.m.

While other schools tell you when you must attend class, Monroe asks when you are able to attend, and then tailors a schedule that works around your career and family commitments. Flex-Scheduling is education designed to enhance your life, not to interrupt it. Classes start as early as 8:45 a.m. and end as late as 10:45 p.m. You can choose from any combination of day, evening or weekend classes.

Tutorial workshops and laboratories provide individual attention to those students who need extra help with their studies. Workshops and lab sessions are scheduled on a daily basis, while evening workshops vary. On Fridays and Saturdays, workshops are conducted from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and daycare is provided for those students with children. In addition, an elite corps of Monroe students volunteer their time and talent to assist fellow students. Monroe also provides a Learning Resource Center at each campus, where students can utilize a comprehensive array of services and facilities. These include both professional and student tutors in all major subject areas, faculty assistance, computer programs, and audio/visual materials.

Monroe’s Career Resource Center offers students and alumni the vast resources to help prepare and advance their career. Students and alumni can take advantage of career counseling, resume writing workshops, lectures by industry professionals, job fairs and more. Monroe is dedicated to making sure students are prepared before they enter the job market and offer students a life time career resource.

Credits earned at Monroe College are fully transferable to other institutions; however, transfer policies and limits are set by individual schools. Check with the school to which you are considering transferring to determine how many credits it will accept. Monroe's generous transfer policy allows qualified students to transfer up to 30 credits from another institution into an Associate degree program, or up to 90 credits into a Bachelor's degree program.

Qualified students can take any combination of Distance Learning and traditional classes each semester. Monroe also offers totally online degrees in Business, Criminal Justice, Health Services Administration and Medical Administration.  We will begin offering Hospitality Management online in January 2008.

Monroe College has teams in Men's & Women's Basketball, Women's Volleyball, Men's Baseball, Women's Softball, Men’s and Women’s Track & Field and Men's Soccer. Our teams are highly competitive, with some of them competing on a national level.  The Mustang teams are represented by players from all over the globe, including Ghana, Puerto Rico, Canada and the Caribbean Islands. Their success in athletics and in the classroom has enabled many Monroe players to go on to Division I and II NCAA programs at other schools, including Cornell University, Iowa State, Long Island University, and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.

Cooperative Education is conducted by Monroe College in cooperation with businesses, industries, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. The program integrates on-campus study with off-campus work experience. Employment is usually directly related to the student's academic area. In addition to gaining valuable experience, co-op students also receive (3) academic credits at the end of their internship.

Emerson Phillips is the Director of the Office of International Student Services. This office provides assistance and counseling for overseas students on issues ranging from visa applications to employment issues.
