Monica King

“The Voice of Monroe”

If someone had told Monica King, when she began the Executive Secretarial program at the West Farms Bronx campus of the Monroe Business School in the late 50’s that she would eventually be the “Voice of Monroe”—fifty years later—she would never have believed it!

Monica, who arrived in N.Y.C. from Kingston, Jamaica in 1958, was part of a small group of students enrolled in the Executive Secretarial Program.  She graduated in 1960 and began working at a real estate management company in N.Y. that was involved with many of the large commercial deals in the area.   While she was at this company, she met her future husband, Rudolph, who was a lawyer at a local law firm.

Monica and Rudolph moved to New Rochelle and she enrolled at the College of New Rochelle, where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree. She also was busy raising her two children.  Her daughter, Yvette, is now a lawyer in N.Y.C.  Her son Howard is a design engineer living in Fishkill.  He and his wife Rosemarie have two daughters ages 17 and 19.

In 1985, Monica was pleased when she learned that her alma mater, Monroe, would be opening a new campus on Main St. in New Rochelle.  Over the years, she watched with interest the progress of Monroe, as it grew from a small building on the main street to an impressive campus, including a state-of-the-art dormitory and culinary arts center, in the downtown area.

When Monica and her husband sponsored a young woman to attend Monroe, they were able to connect with President Stephen Jerome and Vice President Marc Jerome at the spring graduation.  She casually mentioned that she would love to work at the campus in New Rochelle.  There was an opening for a front desk person to greet the students and answer the phones and Monica was promptly hired.

When asked what she enjoys about her position, Monica replied, “I love the contact with the students.  They are so excited to realize that I am the face behind the voice.  Everyone stops by to say “hi”…including the vendors.

We look forward to having Monica greet us at the New Rochelle Campus for a long time to come!
