Alum of the Month - MAY 2009
Omar Newell
Omar arrived at Monroe College from Jamaica West Indies in ‘05 and immediately became an active presence on campus. He joined the SIFE team (Students in Free Enterprise) and was one of the presenters at the Regional Competition. The judges were impressed with the participants from Monroe and awarded them first place in that competition. Omar also helped establish the Pre-Law Club and the Debate team on campus. He was one of the founding members of the Honors Council.
After Omar expressed an interest in law, he went on to seek a mentor, at a prestigious New York law firm, who encouraged him to apply to the top law schools in the U.S. He has just finished his first year at Northwestern Law School in Chicago, Illinois. He continues to be very active at Northwestern and is an important member of the Black Law Student's Association and the Diverse Admissions committee. Omar will spend his summer working with a professor at Northwestern doing research on the synergies between social activism and litigation. Omar's advice to other students and alumni is, "Be as active as possible on campus and explore all the opportunities that come your way!"
We are proud to honor Omar Newell as our Distinguished Alumni of the Month. |
