Since being named head coach in 2006, Coach Melendez has transformed the Monroe Mustangs baseball program so that it simultaneously develops solid players and productive young men who are college graduates.
Coach Melendez believes that good academics go hand-in-hand with on-field performance and he insists that his players make similar commitments to their team and their class work.
He debuted with Monroe in 2005 as an assistant coach with vast baseball coaching and playing experience. He was appointed as head coach one year later. A long time assistant coach at Lehman College, Melendez was a solid catcher for the Bangor Lumberjacks and the Allentown Ambassadors in the Northeast League and the Schaumburg Flyers, Quebec City Capitales, and the Waterbury Spirit of the Northern League.
