Touring Sing Sing – October 17, 2008
On October 17th, the Criminal Justice Club visited Sing Sing Correction Facility, in Ossining, New York. The prison currently houses 2,200 prisoners and has a staff of 1,000.
Members of the CJ Club toured the facility including; the mess hall, barber shop, shower area, disciplinary hearing room, chapel, and the infamous yard. Students also got a glimpse of prison life while visiting "A Block” that is 88 cells long where prisoners are housed in individual cells that are 7 feet wide and 14 feet long furnished with a steel toilet, sink, and bed along with all of their personal belongings.
Students learned about academic requirements recruits must meet while in the Corrections Academy and the students asked many questions about exams, assignments, and promotional opportunities. |
