What is the difference between apartment style and suite style housing?

Monroe’s suite-style Residence Halls are more traditional dormitory-style facilities with shared common areas, a computer lounge, and fitness room.  Each suite has a bathroom, and is also equipped with a small refrigerator and microwave.  Apartment-style Residence Halls feature full kitchens, as well as a fully furnished living area.

What extra-curricular, programs are available?

The Office of Residence Life and the Office of Student Services offer students various opportunities to explore New Rochelle and surrounding areas. Some recent events include a Moonlight Boat Cruise around NYC, Broadway Shows; Educational Seminars and Workshops (health, safety, life skills); and Cultural Trips to New York (Botanical Gardens, New York Aquarium).

Also, to cheer on our nationally-recognized sports teams, Monroe College frequently provides transportation to and from our collegiate games. In addition, Monroe College student clubs sponsor parties, fund-raising events, movie nights, and more.  So, there is always an activity that students can participate in.

Are there monitors or security provided for the apartments or dorms to ensure safety?

Each residence hall on campus is managed by a Residence Hall Director (RD) who is a full-time employee and is dedicated to working with college students in a residential setting. Resident Assistants (RAs) are undergraduate students responsible for the creation and maintenance of a residence hall community conducive to the academic, social, and personal needs of residents. Resident Assistants also help to coordinate special Residence events for students. RAs are expected to confront violations of college policy, act as a role model in proper and desirable behavior, encourage residents to assume responsibility for their own actions/choices, and encourage respect and appreciation of each other's differences.

Safety and security are very important to Monroe College. The majority of our facilities are equipped with surveillance cameras.  Additionally, we have a 24 hour Public Safety Staff  that secure our buildings and surrounding areas, as well as respond to emergencies or issues around the clock.

Are phones provided? How will students be contacted?

Allison Hall residents are provided with in-room telephones and will be given the phone numbers when they check in at the beginning of the semester. Apartments, however, do not have land lines and therefore Monroe College encourages resident students to purchase cell phones. In cases of emergency, you can call the toll-free Monroe College number 1-800-55-MONROE, and you can be transferred to the Residence Life Office.

What are the requirements for housing eligibility?

How many times does the school close per semester?

Monroe College has three semesters in our academic calendar. The only time the college closes completely is at the end of the Spring semester in early August. It is always the last day after the end of final examinations. Students must make arrangements in advance to move out completely.

What if I don't get along with my roommate?

Communication and consideration are the key elements in a successful roommate relationship, and it may take a couple of weeks to develop a rapport. Resident Assistants are trained to facilitate and are a good resource to help facilitate discussions. Within the first three weeks of the semester residents will meet with their RA and complete an Agreement Form.  This provides roommates enough time to establish a working relationship.

Is there storage space available?

Monroe does not provide or have available storage space for student belongings during semester breaks, or over the summer.  During the academic year, students must store all their belongings in their room, or apartment, and all furniture provided by the University must remain in the room or apartment unless removed by maintenance staff. Therefore, students should plan on bringing only what is necessary.

What do I do if some of my personal belongings get damaged?

The College does not assume responsibility for loss of property or damage to personal belongings. All residents are advised to consider personal property insurance and check with their family's homeowner's insurance policy for possible coverage.

How do I report a maintenance problem?

Emails should include the following information:

  • Name (First, Last)
  • Cell Phone #
  • Apt/ Room #
  • Detailed description of the maintenance problem

For emergency maintenance needs requiring immediate attention, residents should contact the Office of Residence Life during normal business hours and the RA or Public Safety outside of normal business hours.
