Many government agencies have internship programs. As is the case with all good internship programs, applications should be submitted well in-advance. Many internship programs tend to be full-time summer positions that last between 8 – 12 weeks. Many are paid, or at least offer some sort of stipend that can cover some living costs. Some agencies have more extensive internship programs for graduate students.
Helpful tips:
- Federal government jobs are available throughout the U.S. and the world, and are not only found in Washington, D.C.
- Jobs with the federal government are attractive because of competitive salaries, excellent benefits, meaningful and challenging work, opportunities for advancement, and job security.
- Federal jobs are available for almost all majors. There are virtually federal jobs for all backgrounds and interests.
- Lack of jobs in other sectors of the economy has made government jobs an attractive option, but the economy alone is not the only reason for increased interest in federal jobs.
