Internship Testimonials (2008 - 2009)

Malcolm White - IT Student
March of Dimes
Data Entry Operator

My internship at the March of Dimes showed me alot about what it's like to work in an actual IT environment. At first I was a little concerned that my lack of experience would hinder me from doing well but it turned out just the opposite. They showed me how to enter data properly and also informed me that I wouldn't be doing much of any QA (quality assurance) stuff, which is what I signed up for in the first place.

Actually, this news discouraged me because I wanted to learn about what QA really entailed. Instead I had to do alot of data entry that became rather tedious after a while. During the course of doing it I came across some errors in their database which prompted them to teach me about bugs and how to log defects. Ironically, this was inadvertent QA training, which I appreciated. Although it was surprising to me how it happened; it's funny how things turn out!

Soon, I became more familiar with their database system and my quality of work had became so good that they began to expect more and more from me. This made me somewhat nervous because at times I felt pressured. Eventually, though, the nervousness wore off. By the end of my internship I had made a good enough impression that they decided to give me a part-time job which I am doing right now.

I do feel grateful that I took the integrated business apps course because it helped prepare me for excel and how to use it. Sad to say, though, my internship was actually easier than my current school work! But it's worked out great.

Bryan Jimenez - IT Student
HRA (Human Resources Administration)

Help Desk Technician

I do not see my internship as just a requirement; I see it as an opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and skills in my career field.

While on the internship, I learned how to behave in a professional environment and applied a lot of what I learned in class. Also, this internship helped me learn professional ways of expressing myself in a business framework. I learned how to work in teams, under pressure, and sometime under difficult problem-solving situations.

In the long run, I gained even more motivation to acquire more knowledge and skills within my major.

TremaineGreen - IT Student

North Bronx Counseling Center

Computer Lab Assistant

My internship was a good way to help me launch my career. I gained experience that puts me a step ahead and it helped me develop a network of business contacts in my field. While, I also get hands-on experience, I was able to apply the skills that I learned in class into my internship.

Also, I expanded my oral and written communication skills. Before I was too shy to speak in a large group of people, but this internship let me overcome this weakness. In fact, once when my supervisor was not there, she left me charge of the computer lab, which for me was significant. As result, I gained self confidence and motivation.

Joan Bonilla - CJ student

NY State Unified Court System - Nassau County Supreme Court

Student Ambassador Program

I have been assigned to work with mediation and arbitration. We assist the attorneys with their cases and also try to settle before trial. We also work fee disputes. We have a panel of arbitrators and work with them and the client to try and get a resolution. My supervisor helps me learn the functions of this side of the Court System and also gives me the opportunity to sit in on trials such as malpractice, divorce, and tax invasion.

I can't stop telling everyone how wonderful my experience has been with this program and how much knowledge I have gained since I'm interning here. I recommend to any student who's interested in this programthat they should go for it because I'm sure they will love it as much as I do and will gain the knowledge I did.

Vivian Torres - Culinary Arts Student

Robbins Wolfe

Line Cook

My internship is with Robbins Wolfe, an "eventeur" owned by Culinart and I have been delighted with the experience there. Not only did the OCA assist me in securing placement in my area of interest, but I have been able to put into practice what I have learned in both the classroom and the Culinary Arts Center. On the other hand, I am learning many new culinary and catering functions that I am able to apply in school. For example, I've really enhanced my sense of teamwork. In addition, because the internship allows me to work in a real work environment, I've increased my confidence that I do posses the qualities necessary to be successful in the food and beverage industry.

This internship is a productive way to gain invaluable experience and develop business networks that will definitely open doors for me in the industry. I do recommend that every student take advantage of the internship program and other career-related opportunities.

Emerson Pemberton - IT student

Symbio Technologies

IT Intern

My internship at Symbio Technologies has been a very good experience. It has helped me to identify my interpersonal and technical skills and has given me an advantage in the corporate world.

At my internship I learned that in a corporate environment one must behave with the utmost professionalism. I also learned how to fit into the grand scheme of things in the office environment and that despite certain roles, everyone has a part to play for the betterment of the company.

Ultimately, this internship has shown me my strengths and my areas that need to be improved on. It's been very valuable.
