A Veteran Friendly College

Monroe College has always been a welcoming, supportive community dedicated to the success of every individual, whatever that individual’s background. It is a compassionate, caring atmosphere that perfectly suits the returning veteran.  As a result, Monroe College now has one of the largest veteran populations in the New York area. And the men and women who have enrolled here after their military service have collaborated with our faculty and administration to produce a veteran-friendly environment.

At Monroe, there is a fully staffed, Office of Veterans Affairs. It includes Military Benefits Specialists, Veterans Admission Counselors and a Director of Military and Veterans Affairs.  They have been there, done that, and they will make the admissions and financial aid process easy. Plus, they will help you understand the benefits that you have earned as well as any new regulations.

We start by waiving the Admissions Fee for all veterans, but there are many other reasons that make Monroe an ideal place to pursue your educational goals as you’ll see below.

A Real World Education

Since its founding in 1933, Monroe College has emphasized real-world understanding as a key element of a student's academic journey. The college combines innovative academics with a signature internship program, experiential learning and in some cases a study abroad program. Our professors are often working professionals in the areas in which they teach.

This unique learning environment provides students with an education like no other. The incorporation of course work and real-world experience develops students' critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills while introducing them to new perspectives in their fields. As a result, undergraduates and graduates are better prepared for the success in their careers and ultimately, in life.

Our Programs

Students have the opportunity to earn a degree in some of the fastest growing fields through one of our seven schools.  Monroe also offers students the opportunity to specialize in a specific area by earning either a concentration or minor.  Whatever you choose, you’ll know that you’ll be both challenged and supported by a group of professors that often come from industry and have a singular focus of making sure that you are academically successful.

Accelerated Learning

Unlike most colleges, which award a Baccalaureate degree after completion of four years, Monroe has a three-semester calendar that lets you earn an Associate degree in as few as 16 months and your Bachelor's in an additional 16 months.

On-Campus or Online

Our campuses provide for a wide range of experiences for students.  Our Bronx campus provides commuting students with a bustling urban environment and a convenient location located near major public transportation routes.  Our New Rochelle campus offers students the opportunity to live on-campus or commute in our lovely downtown suburban campus just a 30 minute train ride from grand Central Station in New York City.

Students needing the most flexibility in their studies should consider our online programs. You’ll receive the same real world education that is the hallmark of Monroe College while being able to complete your classes anywhere that you have access to the internet.  Our online classes are taught by the same professors that teach on campus, and our online students have all the same campus privileges that our on-campus students receive.

Accreditation

Monroe College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.   The Middle States Commission on Higher Education is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

New Regulations as of August 1:

  • The maximum payment a veteran can receive for tuition and fees per academic year will be $18,077. Once that amount has been exhausted the college will use funds from the Yellow Ribbon Program to cover the balance of tuition.
  • Veterans will not receive the Basic Allowance for Housing during mandatory school breaks. Example: School begins on September 7, 2011; the veteran will only receive the housing allowance for 24 days, not the month’s worth.
  • Veterans will not receive a full housing allowance if they are less than full-time.
  • Veterans taking 100 percent of their classes on line can now qualify for housing stipends of up to $673 per month for full-time enrollment.
  • If students withdraw from any classes, their VCH33 payment will be reduced once the withdrawal and new enrollment status is reported to the VA.
