Honors Contracts

Honors contracts are available exclusively to senior Honors students as an option to earn Honors units.  Contracts are used sparingly, and only when a student’s schedule cannot accommodate a regularly scheduled Honors course, when an Honors course is cancelled, or when an unforeseen circumstance precludes the previously outlined method for earning Honors units.

CONTRACT PROCESS:

  1.
    1. The student meets with an Honors advisor (Professor Kathryn MacDonald or Professor Mimi Loftus) to determine the feasibility of a contract.
    2. The student and advisor select the type of contract appropriate for the student’s major.
    3. The student contacts the faculty member and requests, in writing, permission to use a contract in the course.
    4. Once the faculty member agrees to allow the contract, the student writes the contract, and presents it to the Honors Board for approval.  Please note, contracts not presented to the Honors Board for approval before the start of the semester will be void, even if the student meets the obligations established by the contract.
    5. If the Honors Board approves the contract, the student must demonstrate that he or she has fulfilled the criteria set forth in the contract, including participating in Honors Colloquium.

Listed below are standard contracts, although there may be differences in availability across majors.

Course Enhancements

An Honors student who is registered for a traditional, non-Honors course may request to enter into a contract with a faculty member to explore material beyond the course objectives and must complete a additional substantive research project, which is presented at Colloquium.

 Honors Seminars

Small groups of Honors students may be registered for a weekly Honors seminar class, and the group and the faculty member would develop a contract.  The students adopt the responsibility for presenting material and leading discussions, with the faculty serving as facilitator and mentor.

 Honors Independent Studies

Individual students may pursue an Honors Independent Study by entering into a contract with a faculty member.  Independent Studies meet once per week, and the student undertakes significant responsibility for conducting research, and completing projects under the guidance of the instructor.

 Honors Internships

Honors students may request to earn Honors Units through their internships via a contract.  The level and quality of work that the student will be performing, along with the academic outcomes, must meet Honors standards to be worthy of Honors Units.
