Admissions – Parents & Guidance Counselors

Admissions – Parents & Guidance Counselors

We recognize the key role Parents and Guidance counselors play in guiding high school students towards college.  We’d like to make sure that both you and your students have the proper information to make the right decision.  We offer a number of different opportunities for students to get to know us, including our Jumpstart program that offers a free 3-credit college class to high school seniors.   Last year, over 400 high school students took advantage of this program.   But that’s just the beginning.

Getting to Know Monroe

Take a tour.  Sit-in on a class.  Speak with an Admissions Counselor or Financial Aid expert.  Meet with one of our academic deans or athletic coaches.  Visit our Office of Career Advancement.  Talk to our current students.  We invite you to get to know us.  All of us.  We think it says a lot about our institution that before you guide a student to Monroe, you can speak to the people that will make your student successful.    In the meantime, here is some information to start to think about.

Tuition, Scholarships and Graduation Rates

We think you need to consider all three before making a decision about where to guide your student.  Although we are one of the most affordable private institutions in New York, our tuition is more than the public institutions in the area.  However, we offer significant scholarship opportunities for academically qualified high school graduates with a high school GPA above 80 that can significantly reduce the tuition expense.  Plus, for our neediest students we offer institutional grants that ensure there is no out of pocket expense for them to attend Monroe.  We’ve even adopted an innovative textbook rental program that allows students to rent their textbooks for less than half the price of purchasing a new printed text.  The bottom line is that we are very concerned about our students’ finances, the debt they will incur as students and their ability to pay back their student loans when they graduate.

But that’s just the beginning.  Our students graduate at a significantly higher rate than many other institutions in our area.  In fact, Monroe ranks #1 in New York State for awarding degrees to black and Hispanic students.  We invite you to compare our graduation rates with the other schools in our area at the Department of Education’s website (Link to http://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator).   We believe that this is a critical factor for you to consider.

A Real World Education Approach

Since its founding in 1933, Monroe College has emphasized real-world understanding as a key element of a student's academic journey. The college combines innovative academics with a signature internship program, experiential learning and in some cases a study abroad program.

This unique learning environment provides students with an education like no other. The incorporation of course work and real-world experience develops students' critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills while introducing them to new perspectives in their fields. As a result, undergraduates and graduates are better prepared for the success in their careers and ultimately, in life.

Accreditation

Monroe College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.   The Middle States Commission on Higher Education is an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Our Programs

We do not offer every program in the world.  However, our students have the opportunity to earn a degree in some of the fastest growing fields through one of our seven schools.  Monroe also offers students the opportunity to specialize in a specific area by earning either a concentration or minor.  Whatever your student chooses, you’ll know that they will be both challenged and supported by a group of professors that often come from industry and have a singular focus of making sure that you are academically successful.

Our Diverse Student Body

In the last 10 years, few institutions have seen the magnitude of changes that Monroe has experienced.  Our student body that typically came from the New York metropolitan area has expanded nationally and now comes from 23 different states.  Students from 63 countries internationally study with us.  It makes for our very own melting pot and we believe to the worldliness of our students.
