Akiko Ishino Country: Japan
Akiko first learned of the ELLI program when she was attending college in Japan. She dreamed to continue her studies in the United States, but knew that her English skills were not polished enough to take and understand academic classes. Akiko especially had difficulties speaking and listening in English, so Monroe’s ELLI program seemed like the perfect answer.
Two semesters later, Akiko is able to understand her professors and speak and write in English. She loves living near a diverse city like New York because she enjoys learning about other cultures and ethnicities. With such close access to New York City, Akiko can pursue her loves of shopping, spending time with her friends, and traveling. She is romantic, dreamy and emotional.
Akiko is a very sensitive person. She refuses to view things only from a sober, rational standpoint. What her feelings tell her is just as important to her. In fact, she feels it is important to have dreams in life, too – just as she dreamed to pursue her studies in the U.S.
