Learn English in New York

ELLI is the Monroe College English Language Learning Institute. Located in New Rochelle, just 30 minutes from NYC,  the Language Learning Institute provides students whose primary language is not English with the reading, writing and verbal skill necessary for success in United States colleges and universities. Students will become fluent in English through language instruction, cultural immersion, intensive lab experiences, and courses in U.S. culture and the arts through drama, music, film, dance, and graphic arts.

What makes Monroe College’s Language Learning Institute (ELLI) different than other language institutions?

The Learning Institute at Monroe College is unique because it provides students with a well-rounded English-language curriculum and at the same time immerses them in cultural experiences. New York City and the greater tri-state area are the classrooms of ELLI.

An English Language Learning student will not only gain the skills necessary to thrive in a college institution, but will also gain insights into the diversity of cultures that surround them in today’s global working environment. ELLI students truly become global citizens because the ELLI Program prepares them for the rigors of meeting not only the language needs of the world today, but also the cultural expectations that surround them.

What do we accomplish from the academic and cultural trips?

Experiential learning is a key component of the institute's curriculum. Students will not only receive a top-notch education within the four walls of a classroom, but will also utilize the environment around them to learn.

Trips are organized and planned every semester, based upon the needs and interests of the current ELLI student body. Many of the trips planned not only reinforce concepts taught in ELLI classes, but also expose the students to the culture of the New York City area. Past trips have included excursions to the New York Botanical Garden, The Museum of Natural History and Central Park. We even go out to dinner together sometimes!

Instructors may also opt to invite guest lecturers to their classes to further enhance the curriculum. Through exposure to a variety of individuals, students will further learn about the diversity of the world in which they live.

Monroe College boasts a variety of Academic Support Services, including a fully-functional Academic Center with tutors, both peer and professional.
