Information

Monroe College’s Summer Law Program (MSLP) for upper classmen high school students and incoming college freshmen is a great opportunity to explore a career in law and Criminal Justice; in general, get a taste of college life, and earn three college credits in the process.

Careers in Criminal Justice, including the practice of law, law enforcement, investigation and forensics dominate the news today.  Television drama shows that take place in courtrooms, police precincts and law offices succeed because of the public’s insatiable interest in this often exciting field. Although interesting and entertaining, these programs rarely, if ever, go behind the scenes or delve into what is required to prepare for the myriad careers available in this profession.  MSLP at Monroe College does!

You will participate in interactive dialogues with guest lecturers experienced in all aspects of the diverse profession of Criminal Justice.  You will witness court proceedings, meet judges, attorneys and correctional professionals, counselors, social workers and forensics experts who live out the legal system in its most powerful human dimensions.

This summer’s program – Monday, August 09th   (late afternoon arrival on Monroe’s New Rochelle campus) through Friday, August 20th – will culminate in your participation as lawyers for the plaintiff or lawyers for the defense in a mock trial presided over by a real judge in an actual courtroom in the New York Supreme-County Courthouse.   A gala awards ceremony and dinner for you and your family will wrap up your 2010 Summer Law Program experience.

To participate, you will need to be curious, take calculated risks, and be eager to work with, live with, dine with and study with all different kinds of people. You must also be excited about learning and putting your best thinking and communication skills to the test. By the end of MSLP, you will have a real taste of what’s required to succeed in the various careers available within the Criminal Justice profession.

You will also experience many interesting, exciting and just plain fun special field trips to various destinations throughout Metropolitan New York that will further enrich your MSLP experience and your understanding of the criminal justice system.

Remember:

You’ll be earning 3 college credits!
