The Curriculum
Monroe’s challenging human services curriculum is heavy on field placements, giving you plenty of opportunities to decide where you want to focus. You’ll also study psychology, ethics, crisis intervention, and behavior.
Principles of Interviewing and Report Writing
Learn to interview in a clinical setting, with skills such as communicating involvement, active listening, and open and closed ended questioning. Using role-play, case studies, and digital recordings, practice expressing empathy.

Field placements let you road test your academic know how. They give you a chance to see where you want to work. They give potential employers a chance to determine if you’re a good fit.

Your Future Human Services Career
Below are a few typical positions for a Human Services graduate:
- Case Manager: Help people with advice, steer them toward the services they need, create plans for treatment.
- Substance Abuse Counselor: Listen to clients, understand causes for their addictive behavior, support recovery.
- Juvenile Counselor: Help a troubled young client by providing empathy, advice, and focused care. A juvenile court counselor works with juveniles who have been convicted of crimes.
- Child Life Specialist: Work with children and families to help them cope with the challenges of hospitalization, illness, and disability.
- Juvenile Probation Officer: Supervise youth on probation or parole to ensure compliance.
- Behavioral Management Aide: Help a child to express his/her needs in a healthy way and reduce stress and negative behaviors.
- Correctional Counselor: Assist incarcerated inmates develop plans to prevent relapse.
- Rehabilitation Counselor: Help those with physical, mental, developmental, or emotional disabilities to live independently.
