David Barton

The school has helped me tremendously, from having strong writing skills to being able to create policy at work.”

David Barton received his Associate and Bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice summa cum laude from Monroe, graduating in 2012 and 2013, respectively. He is currently pursuing his Master’s in Criminal Justice and is the Director of Security/Safety/Buildings/Grounds/Transportation and Emergency Management at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Yonkers. Previously, he was the Director of Security for Westhab. While at Monroe, David was a member of the Veteran’s Club.

David served in the U.S. Navy for five years, four of them in the Military Police, and was deployed in Iraq for almost 10 months.

"Going to Monroe made me love school and learning. I want to know everything. The professors bring learning to the forefront and they tailor the classes to you. I don't want to stop. I’m having an amazing experience at Monroe and I wouldn’t want to go to school anywhere else. I can’t express how much I love being back at school. The school has made me a better leader at work. I write policy for the hospital and I’m having a greater impact on the community at large.

"Prior to Monroe, I was unhappy with my life. I was working five different jobs and was frustrated. I knew I needed an education to get to where I wanted to be. Friends recommended Monroe and I applied. I wasn’t even halfway done with the application when they called to help me with it.

"As a Veteran, Monroe made it so easy. As soon as I applied to the College, they walked me through all the Veteran benefits like the post 9/11 GI Bill, and made the process so easy. The Veteran’s culture at Monroe is amazing and I’ve made a lot of close friends. To go to school without worry is a cool thing. Even during class, the Criminal Justice professors look out for us, asking for our opinion or to share our experience.

"I’m a kid from the Bronx and I didn’t think college was for me. Now, I’m getting my Master’s degree. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Monroe. The school has helped me tremendously from having strong writing skills to being able to create policy at work, I’ve become a more well-rounded individual and I strive to make a difference in my community every day."
